Under certain circumstances an individual other than a parent can be awarded custody of a child. For example, custody can be obtained through the use of a guardianship proceeding. This can be accomplished by a parent voluntarily tranferring custody or by order of the Court. It can done on both a short and long term basis. Another means of transferring custody is through a foster care of adoption proceeding.
