Your pet is property. You cannot be awarded placement.
Even though many people treat their animals as important members of their family, when it comes to divorce, pets are generally considered property. The Court is unlikely to award "placement." In a divorce, a pet is generally awarded to one party. If the parties cannot agree which party is to receive the pet, the Court may ordered the pet sold or one party will have to purchase the pet from the other party. This seems very cold-hearted, but is the state of the law in many states.
