Chief Justice Roberts Declines to Halt Gay Marriage in D.C.

US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., on March 2, 2010, declined to stop a new law allowing gay marriage in Washington, D.C., opening the door for the District to begin providing marriage licenses to same sex couples. Gay marriage opponents petitioned the Supreme Court to stay the law from taking affect until the Supreme Court could decide whether to grant a petition for certiorari.
